Letter from Beth

Dear Denver Neighbor,

I am honored to have the opportunity to seek to represent the fine people of House District 8 in the Colorado State Legislature. I moved to Denver 33 years ago from Washington D. C. because of Denver’s independent spirit, beautiful environment, and the terrific opportunities it provided for a new young lawyer. It has been a wonderful home for my husband and me and our two children, Chris, 18 and Lizzy, 15.

Why do I want to run for State Representative from HD8? It is an exciting time to be a Democrat. There is energy and a new will at the State Capitol to tackle some of the tough issues facing our great state. Affordable health care, topnotch education focusing on the individual child, preservation of our natural environment, and the safety and security of our communities are at the top of my list. There are great challenges ahead, but I can promise you that I will work constantly to address these serious needs of the residents of District 8.

My experience in both the private and public sector provides me with the ability to hit the ground running and to be effective for the residents of the District from the beginning.

Every Coloradan must live in a safe environment. We must provide resources up front to our young people to prevent crime, not just deal with its aftermath. We must reduce the shocking rate of recidivism of those released from our prisons.

Every Coloradan deserves access to good quality affordable health care. We must not stop until we can state that all Coloradans have that access.

Every Coloradan must have access to a topnotch education geared to allow each individual child to achieve his or her potential. We must keep pushing until this is a reality.

Our precious resources are dwindling; our climates are changing. We can make choices now that will affect our planet for years to come.

I have a great deal of experience which I bring to the task. As Manager of Safety for the City of Denver and a Chief Deputy District Attorney, I confronted the distressing realities of crime and its aftermath far too often. After the Summer of Violence, we started the Safe City Office which established the juvenile curfew program, the summer work program for youth, and the fund which allowed us to distribute $1,000,000 into Denver neighborhoods to fund community based efforts to keep our kids out of crime. It was a very successful program as we saw juvenile crime rates decrease by 25%. We also started the Police Impact teams to target those areas that had significant crime issues.

As Manager of Safety, I helped implement the city’s first Civilian Review Board to review actions of police and sheriff’s officers. We started the Handicapped Parking Enforcement program that partnered the Police Department with those with disabilities to enforce the Handicapped Parking spots, a great use of civilian resources to fill in gaps in police priorities.

I also have private business experience, having practiced law for several years after I left the DA’s office. Thus, I understand the pressures that small businesses face. I am familiar with state government through my current position supervising over 50 state employees in the Colorado Attorney General’s office. My ability to work with a Republican Attorney General demonstrates my ability to work with people of all political persuasions to get things done.

I have been active in community, civic, and professional associations. My son just graduated from East High School from which I received an Angel Award in 2007 for my work to improve safety at the school as well as coaching the national winning Constitutional Scholars team.

I can promise you that if I am elected, I will work constantly to find solutions to the critically important issues facing our state. Please contact me at 303-358-9247 or beth@mccann08.com if you have any questions or want to discuss any issues. I would love to have your help. You may volunteer on the website or give me a call. I want to hear from you!
